The Tartan Mission

At Tartan Yachts, we believe in quality not compromise, which is why we are committed to building prestige yachts that offer distinctive designs, luxurious accommodations, and unmatched performance.

For us the Tartan shield doesn’t just identify a Tartan. It represents our commitment that every yacht we build must be the best yacht we build.  It represents our dedication to the most advanced build and design technologies available.  It represents over 50 years of heritage and history and the dedication to continue that through the next 50 years.

It represents the pride of owning a Tartan.

  • History

Producing fine yachts since the 1940s

The company we know today as Tartan Yachts has undergone numerous changes over the years, transforming itself through mergers, bankruptcies, and new owners into a still-vibrant builder that remains surprisingly true to its origins. Where most builders of larger sailboats are situated on the East and West Coasts, Tartan is the offspring of two small builders of one-designs in northern Ohio. Through thick and thin, the company has stayed in the Midwest on the shore of the Grand River, though circumstances have pushed it around the county a few times.

Tartan Philanthropy Overview

Sailing is about taking a headwind and turning it into something that will propel you forward as opposed to taking you backward. It's a great metaphor for meeting life’s challenges if you think about it.

Aspire II Nav Foundation

The Winds of Change

Life’s challenges—adversities, tragedies, hardships, crises and bad choices—force change; and change presents opportunities. One action impacts another and our actions create a ripple effect as we sustain currents of hope. Sometimes the smallest acts of kindness can make the biggest impact on lives.

The Aspire II Nav Foundation’s mission is to assist individuals, families, businesses, communities and institutions navigate through the “headwinds of life” — poor health, living environment,  lack of education or training, criminal record or economic hardships — and empower success.

Established in 2010, before the Malbasa’s acquiring of Tartan Yachts, the Aspire II Nav Foundation is a charitable organization under section 501c3 of the Internal Revenue Code.  With initial gifts from several generous contributors, they, along with other contributors share an abiding passion for advancing human achievement by removing obstacles or providing tools for those individuals or companies that might have otherwise encountered adverse headwinds in the real world in which we live.  Our philanthropic efforts are anchored to the guiding principle of giving deserving people support when traditional resources don’t.

Helping Others Navigate Through the Headwinds of Life

Aspire II Nav Foundation is a nonprofit, private foundation that restores faith when hope is at risk.

“A mother’s sudden death caused her college athlete son to drop out of school to care for his sister who has Down’s syndrome. He later obtained a scholarship and financial aid but was without transportation. Aspire II Nav provided him with transportation expenses so he could attend his college during his junior year and continue to strive for his aspirations.”

“A single mother received assistance from the Foundation so her child could attend an afterschool enrichment program while she worked and pursued her GED.”

“A single mom, in order to regain custody of her children, completed a drug rehabilitation program and needed to have housing to be reunited. Although working and able to afford the rent, she needed an extra three months security deposit due to her background. The Foundation was able to help.  She obtained her apartment and regained custody of her children.”

Community Outreach

We are giving back to the communities that support us.  Just as we, at Tartan Yachts, constantly strive to improve on the unities between wind, water and lift, so too do we actively seek out ways to better unlock the human potential.  First, starting with the 2014 Model Year, with each new yacht that we sell, an honorarium celebrating the purchase will be contributed to Aspire II Nav Foundation in the name of each of our new Owner(s).  Second, we are inviting each of our Dealers, Suppliers, Yacht Owners, Tartan Owner Chapters and any other individual, Foundation or Company interested in improving the human condition, to consider joining with us by making one or more contributions to Aspire II Nav Foundation.  Contributions are deductible.
